Please refer to these links for questions regarding how the measures in this report were created or calculated:
Incidence
An assessment of breast cancer in different regions, age groups, or demographics, based on the number of new breast cancer cases diagnosed over a period of time.
Please refer to the methodology for questions regarding how the measures in this report were created or calculated. Data presented in this report consists of data submitted to the Maine Health Data Organization (MHDO) from the Department of Health and Human Services Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Data is limited to data collected in the Maine Cancer Registry and excludes cases captured through interstate data exchange.
Screenings
Medical tests, such as mammograms, help identify breast cancer at an early stage when treatment is more effective.
Please refer to the methodology for questions regarding how the measures in this report were created or calculated. Data presented in this report consists of All-Payer Claims Data (APCD) and Hospital Encounter Data submitted to the Maine Health Data Organization (MHDO).
The APCD includes claims from commercial insurance carriers, third-party administrators (TPAs), pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), dental benefit administrators, MaineCare (Maine Medicaid), and CMS (Medicare). Health care claims processors regularly submit a completed health care claims data set for all members who are Maine residents to MHDO.
The Hospital Encounter Data includes all inpatient and outpatient services of the hospital and services provided by hospital-owned specialty groups and primary care practices.
Some populations are missing from this data that may impact the results shown. Data presented may not include or be limited for:
- Indian Health Services
- Veterans’ Health Services
- Self-Funded Insurance Plans (a majority of the self-funded or commercial data in the APCD is from non-Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 [ERISA] plans)
- Uninsured individuals if they went to a healthcare setting not captured through the Hospital Encounter Data or received services out-of-state
Mortality
An indication on the effectiveness of prevention, screening, and treatment efforts, based on the number of deaths caused by breast cancer over a period of time.
Please refer to the methodology for questions regarding how the measures in this report were created or calculated. Data presented in this report consists of All-Payer Claims Data (APCD), Hospital Encounter Data, and Cancer Registry and Vital Statistics Death Records submitted to the Maine Health Data Organization (MHDO) from the Department of Health and Human Services Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The cancer stage and histology associated with the Vital Records death is assigned based on the details at the time of diagnosis and may not reflect the stage and histology at the time of death.
Patient Characteristics
Patient Characteristics provides detailed insights on a cohort of Mainers diagnosed with Breast cancer as their first cancer diagnosis, with cohort groups starting in 2019. For these cohorts, their health care procedure and service history before and after diagnosis are assessed through merged data between the Maine Health Data Organization (APCD and Hospital Encounter data) and the Maine Cancer Registry. The procedure and service history contain data from 2017 and onward. MHDO utilizes de-identified Person IDs to link unique individuals in the MHDO Data Warehouse.
